I'm Giving Away "Delivering Happiness"!

One of the fun things that happens to me every now and then is that I get to read advanced copies of books that are going to be hot Hot HOT! And lucky me just received not one but TWO copies of Delivering Happiness by Zappos CEO Tony Hsieh.

I’ll just give you a peek at the table of contents so you can see that this book is ALL about Escaping Mediocrity. :-)

Section I: Profits

1. In Search of Profits

2. You Win Some, You Lose Some

3. Diversify

Section II: Profits and Passion

4. Concentrate Your Position

5.  Platform for Growth: Brand, Culture, Pipeline

Section III: Profits, Passion and Purpose

6. Taking It to the Next Level

7. End Game

Once I finish reading it, I plan to do a full video review. But like I said, I got TWO copies – one for me and one to share and I don’t want to wait to share.

I would like to give my extra copy, along with a few more of my favorite books, to someone in The Tribe.

Sooo….with the help of Maddy Dychtwald (@GoInfluence), I’ve thought of a way to combine 1) shoes 2) getting rid of stuff and 3) doing good in the world. Here’s how it’s going to work:

1) Go through your currents shoes and the shoes of anyone who lives in your house. Find the ones that in great shape but that aren’t being worn. Put them all in a row.

2) Choose a charity who needs your shoes.

2) Snap a picture of your shoes.

3. Upload the picture to Flickr or another online photo hosting site.

4. Leave a comment below and share 1) How many pairs of shoes you gathered 2) What charity you are donating them to and 3) a link to the photo.

5) BONUS POINTS (meaning your name goes in the hat twice): for an additional photo of you making the shoe delivery. :-)

***Amended Rule: If you have given away shoes to a charity in the past 6 weeks and can tell me about it in the comments, your name goes in the hat to win the book too. ***

Everyone who enters will get their name put in the hat and The Young Turk will draw the winner!

Deadline: Sunday, May 2, Midnight EST.

I know, I’m asking a lot. But I have an exceptional tribe who will rise to the challenge.  And remember, you will get an advanced copy of Delivering Happiness, plus copies of some of my very favorite books (I already know of three – and will be adding more).

Can’t wait to see how YOU deliver happiness!!

P.S. If you have a blog and want to apply for your own advanced copies, here is the link for that:

This is such a beautiful and inspired idea! Good luck to all who enter to win this book — and blessings to all who donate gently worn shoes!!

Love this idea! I, too, got 2 review copies and passed one along. Your idea is better. Also loving the book and plan to become a raving fan.

Sarah – this seems an amazing coincidence as I was actually looking at my shoe shelves only today and thinking I need to do something about this! I’m a natural born hoarder – some I have bought and actually never even worn. It’s an obvious metaphor – some of them I just need to let go and take to charity outlet.

I may not take a photo of them – but you have definitely motivated me to do a shoe laundry. Thank you!

Argh! I just got rid of my shoes a couple months ago. Great idea, Sarah. Love the give and get combo.

Great idea Sarah. I regularly donate to the Salvation Army. Don’t have that many shoes left or I’d donate. Need something to wear when I go out singing. Got other things to give away …

    Book sounds great! Thx. G.

I just gave a bunch of shoes and clothes to Goodwill, so I don’t have any shoes to give away right now. Whoever does win this book is very lucky. The book is casual and very informative.

Is the deadline Saturday, May 1st, or Sunday, May 2nd? I don’t want to miss it. :)

DOH! May 2nd. I just changed it in the post!

    Hey Sarah! It’s @alwaysbdesigns from Twitter. :) (a.k.a. Angela). Here’s my story:
Okay, so obviously you know I did this last week, here’s what we gathered:
    2 pairs of men’s dress shoes, 1 pair of women’s sneakers, 2 pairs of women’s sandle/dress-casual shoes.
We donated them to Purple Heart, and organization that comes to your house and picks up donations every week.(along with tons of clothes, belts, and purses – need I say I have an addiction?)
It’s a great cause and we love doing this at least once a month – helps others and keeps our closets organized and clean.
    Here’s to helping others! :)
    Thanks!

Hello Miss Sarah! This is so great. I’ve never donated more than a few pairs of shoes to charity before last week, but a friend emailed me with a story about how he saw these young barefoot children filling potholes in the road with gravel in Nicaragua, so he was collecting shoes to send down to his wife’s relatives so they could distribute them to the kids. These children fill the potholes and then stand by the side of the road with their hands out when the cars drive by (I guess these pot holes are enormous and cause a lot of accidents). Bless their hearts.

Anyway, we immediately collected 19 pairs of shoes (a few were never worn, my kids just wanted to give them) and sent them down to these amazing kids. I didn’t get a chance to send a picture, but I will see if he can get my friend to send one of the children wearing their new shoes for you :)

Thanks for being a giver and encouraging others to do the same. We never realize how important simple things like shoes can be, but hearing about these kids just moved me to action.

Love your idea to combine shoes, charity and a great book raffle. I just gave a bunch of all sorts of clothing and shoes to our local shelter but I did want to encourage anyone who might not know much about the book to enter to win it anyway. I recently toured Zappos headquarters and they gave us copies of the book to take with us. It is truly inspiring and CEO Tony Hsieh writes like he speaks, very easy going. His vision for the book is to change the world as well as tell his story.

Great idea! Unfortunately I did my latest charity run on Monday so my closet is currently clutter free (for now, anyway…). It’s a wonderful way of passing the message along though. I’m going to think of other ways I can deliver happiness this week :)

  • http://production-side.com/ Debbie

Done! I didn’t have any of my own shoes to clear out because I had done it recently (about 3 months ago). However, I convinced my daughter to go through hers. And, while she was clearing her shoes, she loaded up another three bags full of clothes. Bonus! Here’s the pic of six pairs of shoes headed for Goodwill: http://www.flickr.com/photos/18539762@N02/4570879707/
